Who are the 2023 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman winners?

Celebrating portraiture as an expanded field of painting in our times, Julia Gutman wins the Archibald with a textiles work.

Sydney-based artist Julia Gutman has won the 2023 Archibald Prize for her portrait Head in the sky, feet on the ground, of singer-songwriter Montaigne.

It is an interesting choice, punching contemporary textiles into the ‘camera flashes’ and limelight – a work combining a painted gesture and an embroidered storytelling. This work also ticks another box of our times – that of sustainable art making – turning to used and discarded fabrics as her primary medium.
