Award-winning writer Mandy Sayer has become the 10th Hazel Rowley Literary Fellow and will receive $15,000 to write her proposed biography on iconic Australian silent filmmakers the McDonagh sisters.
Sayer told ArtsHub the fellowship will give her the opportunity to immerse herself in writing the biography.
‘The fellowship will allow me to suspend my work as a freelance writer to concentrate solely on the research and writing of this important group biography,’ Sayer said. ‘It will also provide the funds to travel and stay in Canberra to research the McDonagh archives at the National Film and Sound Archive; to travel to Northern NSW to interview their descendants; and to possibly travel to London (Covid permitting) to interview the sons of Isabel McDonagh, who are now in their eighties.’
