An artist’s impression of the completed project
The work is a combined scientific project and art installation which depends on the capacity of oysters to remove pollutants such as cadmium, lead, zinc, mercury and copper from waterways.
The River Derwent, on which the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) sits, is one of the worst rivers in the world for heavy metal pollution. Although contemporary industry no longer pollutes the river, the legacy of years of pollution remains.
