Opera rises from the ashes

A night at the opera can be transformative for a regional community recovering from tragedy. As bushfires rage again, here is an inspiring story from the ashes of Black Saturday.

When the Black Saturday bushfires tore through the historic town of Marysville in Victoria, they destroyed almost the entire town. The February 2009 inferno claimed 40 lives and destroyed 536 homes. The only building left standing in the main street was a bakery. A day after the fires, the popular mountain hamlet resembled an alien planet of ash, twisted iron roofs, smouldering vehicles and fallen trees.
