In 1974, Sweden was the first country in the world to change its Government funded ‘Maternity leave’ to ‘Parental leave’ opening up equal opportunity for fathers to access paid parental leave for the first time. Today, in modern-day Sweden, parents are entitled to 480 days of paid parental leave with the Swedish Government encouraging both parents to split the leave equally.
