Personal stories can help us understand universal truths. And so it is with Stories Then & Now, a new theatrical production being staged at Sydney’s Carriageworks. In Stories Then & Now, six Asian Australian storytellers dive into the pasts of their families, sharing tales that help them unravel how they came to live in today’s Australia.

The stories vary widely. In one, a dancer with a broken heart turns to burlesque to hide her pain. Another is a story of war, and how it causes a father to lose his children, a woman to lose her village, and a young man to lose his aspirations. In another, a young professional woman ‘outsources’ her search for a husband. There’s also the story of a traveller, who finally embraces her cultural homeland. Together, they chart a journey of emotions that are sure to move its viewers.
