Peeling sign language off the page

The Perth Theatre Company is bringing sign language off the page and to the stage in telling the story of JJ, the son of deaf parents. 

The novel is filled with the language and symbols of Auslan, a naturally visual medium, difficult to communicate through writing. In the book, Goldsworthy uses diagrams as well as descriptions to describe communication between the characters. But the author acknowledges the play has an advantage.
