The six state symphony orchestras are increasingly reliant on philanthropy. In some cases their philanthropic income has not just doubled or tripled in the past decade; it has increased by a factor of more than 15.
The most successful fundraiser is the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO). In 2004 it raised just $186,367 in donations. A decade later it brought in more than $3.2 million. While working with a smaller quantum, Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has also seen a massive increase, from $85,817 in 2008 to $1.3 million in 2015.
