Copyright is dead

Depressing news for creators. The argument that copyright is dead convinced the audience at the Wheeler Centre debate.

Suelette Dreyfus gave her first novel away for free online. More than 400,000 digital downloads were made within the first two-year period, creating unexpected synergies and opportunities.

‘Copyright controls people, money and ideas,’ said Dreyfus, citing Disney as one of many large conglomerates including Apple and Amazon who have turned intellectual property rights into big business. In recent times Disney pushed to extend copyright to effectively maintain ownership of some of their most iconic characters including Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.
