Projects and marketing officer for Creative Regions Jess Marsellos was more fortunate than most residents of Bundaberg when record floods devastated and demoralised the city. She was in a position to help others, who she affectionately and respectfully calls “flood refugees.” It was at her place that the idea was born to bring the giant rubber duck that delighted audiences at the Sydney Festival to Bundaberg, to rally the town and find a reason to smile when there are so many reasons not to. There is something charming and resilient about the story that has attracted the attention of the Sydney Morning Herald and Brisbane Times. Bundaberg has taken to the duck as a mascot of sorts, topping pies as a garnish from the bakery or appearing on work sites, car aerials and in public places. The story that follows was written by Jess Marsellos for ArtsHub.
