More TV channels but fewer Australian programs – that could be the result if the Broadcasting Legislation Amendment on Convergence is passed.

The Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG) describes the Bill as an ‘insult to Australian audiences’. It says such rushed legislation and ill-informed decision-making contradicts not only public opinion and expert review but also the recommendations of the ‘Convergence Review’ on which the Bill is based. AWG Executive Director Jacqueline Elaine said, ‘The ALP claims to understand that seeing Australian stories on Australian screens is vital in reflecting and maintaining our identity, but this legislation simply does not support that claim.’
