Perth trumpeter Andrew Gioia has been awarded the inaugural Alan Corbet Scholarship.

Launched this year by the Perth Jazz Society, in partnership with the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, JAZZWA, Jazz Fremantle and The Ellington, the $1000 scholarship seeks to support the artistic development of an emerging jazz musician.

Although only completing his honours degree in 2012, Gioia has been performing around Perth for several years, including appearances with the WA Youth Jazz and Mace Francis orchestras, Jamie Oehlers’s ensemble Blowfish, and the newly formed quintet Elbowgrease. Last year he also attended the three-week Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music in Canada, led by renowned trumpeter Dave Douglas.
