Melbourne Youth Orchestras
Conductor - Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra

Melbourne Youth Orchestras seeks an experienced and inspiring conductor to lead the long established Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra.
ABOUT THE ROLE –
CONDUCTOR PERCY GRAINGER YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Melbourne Youth Orchestras seeks an experienced and inspiring conductor to lead the organisation’s longstanding established symphony orchestra – the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra.
The Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra (PGYO) is a full symphony orchestra comprising over 70 musicians aged approx 14-20 years old, of an approximate standard of AMEB Grade 7+. It consists of all instruments in the symphonic orchestral scope including harp and piano.
This orchestra holds a vital place in the Melbourne Youth Orchestras’ Ensemble Program, which includes three symphony orchestras, three symphonic bands, five string orchestras, 2 jazz ensembles and the Adaptive Music Bridging Program. Since the introduction of a junior orchestra earlier this year, PGYO caters to developing young musicians with a significant level of experience and motivation to explore the great works in the Western Classical music idiom.
Supported by a team of expert instrumental tutors, the successful candidate will have a wealth of experience as a conductor and music educator. They will deliver a series of rehearsal and concert programs to engage and inspire young musicians. They will do this by demonstrating enthusiasm and passion for music, fostering a positive, vibrant, and inclusive learning environment together with an excellent conducting technique.
PGYO rehearsals take place on Saturday mornings from 9.00am-12.30pm during the school term at the Melbourne Conservatorium Southbank campus. Three concerts per year will be held in iconic Melbourne venues such as the Iwaki Auditorium, the Melbourne Recital Centre and Hamer Hall.
To be considered for this role, please send your Cover Letter explaining why you would be the ideal candidate and what relevant experience you bring to the role, together with your CV to recruitment@myo.org.au by 5pm on Friday 13 June 2025.
Please note podium trials will be held for this position for successful candidates.
