Arts Worker- Workshop Assistant

Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre (“GAAC”) is a trading name used by Girringun Aboriginal Corporation (“GAC”) to promote the Arts aspect of the core business. Both Girringun and GAAC are based in the Nth Qld town of Cardwell, strategically located mid-way between the major centres of Townsville and Cairns. Girringun has become a very well-known and respected corporation through its three decades long record of community and government engagement. The GAAC building/Keeping Place which houses the art production space and training centre now includes Muulga.

Core to the aims;

Girringun and GAAC are preservation of culture and advancement of the 9 tribal groups that they support: Bandjin, Djiru, Girramay, Gugu Badhun, Gulngay, Jirrbal, Nywaigi, Warrgamay and Warungnu.

POSITION DESCRIPTION Arts Worker

Workshop Assistant – Part time| 15 hours per week

 

AWARD: Amusement, Events and Recreation Award 2025 from $24.95 per hour (superannuation + salary sacrifice available)

Position Summary

This position reports to Art Centre Manager and is based at the Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre & Keeping Place Gallery – 235 Victoria Street, Cardwell QLD 4849. This position is to provide administrative and clerical support to the Manager and to the day-to-day operations of the Gallery & Keeping Place. This position provides an opportunity to develop professional skills, learn Indigenous Culture and support the Girringun artists.

Please Note:

  • The position is subject to a six-month probationary period and an annual performance review.
  • The position is reliant on the availability of ongoing funding and organisational financial capacity.

Duty Statement

This position will undertake tasks in the following key areas:

  • Art Centre Premises & Keeping Place: Monitor spaces for cleanliness and public safety, Maintain cleanliness in the workplace.
  • Artwork: Assist in cataloguing, documentation, storage, display and shipment of artworks. Adhere to quality control guidelines.
  • Artists: Support artists wherever possible in a courteous manner including supporting travel to workshops
  • Cultural Protocols: Observe cultural protocols in all facets of work.
  • Assist in hanging and dismantling exhibitions in the Girringun Art Centre Gallery.
  • Public Health and Safety: Adhere to Girringun Public Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Visitors: Engage with visitors so that their experience at the art centre, keeping place and studio is positive.
  • Workshops: Assist in the preparation of materials for workshops, food handling and clean-up, respond to artist enquiries, lock-up and open up.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Display knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural obligations and protocols.
  • Ability to handle sales enquiries & cash handling.
  • Proactive administrative and organisational skills with effective written and verbal communication.
  • Willingness to travel and work outside of regular business hours, and holder of a full driver’s license.

  • Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts
