This year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which opened on Friday and runs for three weeks, is hailed as the biggest yet, with an overwhelming 3193 shows from 47 countries across 299 venues.
And these figures don’t even begin to include the impromptu acts, the Free Fringe, Freestival, Free Festival and other sideliners only slightly marginalised from this inclusive giant, which incorporates everything from comedy, theatre and dance to circus, spoken word, exhibitions and cabaret.
