In keeping with its commitment to be always at the forefront of innovation, screen arts and broadcast school AFTRS has introduced a suite of part-time Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

These flexible courses have been created specifically for entry-level practitioners who want to consolidate their technical skills in any of the specialist areas of screen, television and radio.

Martin Brown, who is heading up the division delivering these part-time courses, said that the lecturers on these courses are all industry practitioners. ‘The courses are designed to reflect current industry practice. We have many guest lecturers speaking to the students and in some cases students pitch their projects to industry experts.’

Providing students with relevant industry experience is a key part of the structure of the part-time specialist courses.

‘In some courses we visit companies that provide services in the particular discipline.

‘In the Advanced Diploma in Radio all the students have a two-week work placement at the end of the course,’ said Brown.

AFTRS has also announced two new and entirely online Introductory Courses for absolute beginners: Core Radio Skills and Introduction to Film. Both the courses are FEE-HELP approved and will run for six weeks.

Now, anyone with an internet connection, be it from Port Augusta to Broome or from Hobart and Rockhampton, will be able to enrol and study these online courses.

Core Radio Skills presents the absolute essentials of radio including writing for radio, interview techniques, preparing, producing and presenting radio programs.

Whereas, Introduction to Film is an entree to the world of the screen including terminologies, screen production processes and the impact of technology on the industry.

AFTRS CEO Sandra Levy said it’s about ‘future-proofing graduates for a changing and dynamic world.’

Martin Brown who worked on a number of Baz Luhrmann’s productions including Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge and Romeo+Juliet said AFTRS has great equipment and facilities and students who want to stand out will have many opportunities to do great work.

‘Students studying courses in the Specialist Program are given exercises and projects that are designed to demonstrate their understanding of the subject, but they are also an opportunity for motivated students to showcase their skills and abilities.’
