The Art Gallery of South Australia’s newest dedicated learning activity space The Studio opened to coincide with the gallery’s first major exhibition for the year, Turner from the Tate: The Making of a Master. Until the exhibition closes on May 19, the space will be known as Turner’s Studio, an interactive, facilitated workshop for school students.

Primary classes can investigate the painter’s lifelong fascination with light and colour by using transparent film to create a landscape, seascape or cloudscape of their own. They can take their knowledge back to school to create an exhibition on classroom windows to invite atmospheric light into their space. Years 8 – 12 can experiment with washes, dry brush and wet on wet to create a watercolour in the style of “the painter of light.” Supporting the workshops is a kaleidoscopic digital animation with an original musical score by Adelaide-based artist Bridgette Minuzzo.
