Australia’s arts education failure breaches international law

A leading educator says Australia may be breaking international law in failing to provide arts education to children.

Australia may be in breach of UNESCO’s Convention on the Rights of the Child because of our failure to provide arts education to all children.

Professor Brian  Caldwell told a conference of Canberra teachers this week that UNESCO considers education in the arts to be a universal human right, implying that its absence or sidelining is a breach of the convention on the rights of the child.
