Melbourne-based photographic artist Atong Atem has been named the winner of the inaugural MECCA M-Power grant program for emerging female Visual Artists or Designers. Born in Africa to South Sudanese parents, Atong’s work is inspired by the traditions of African studio portraiture – exploring postcolonial practices in the diaspora.
The grant is presented by the NGV in partnership with MECCA Brands and is designed to empower and encourage local female creators.
The MECCA M-Power program runs for 12 months and includes a $20,000 cash grant, tailored mentoring from both NGV and MECCA Brands resources, professional networking opportunities and ongoing learning opportunities with industry experts.
Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV, said: ‘The MECCA M-Power grant provides a platform for the NGV and MECCA Brands to provide viable development opportunities for early career female artists, and we are excited to announce Atong as the winner of this inaugural prize.
‘Atong’s dynamic practice and connection with wider issues of cultural identity were indicative of her creative vision and artistic rigour and we are excited to see how the MECCA M-Power grant will nurture her boundless potential,’ Ellwood finished.
