Berlin-based Melbourne artist Catherine Evans has been named recipient of the 2017 Georges Mora Fellowship. She will receive a grant of $10,000 and undertake a residency at State Library Victoria.
The cross-disciplinary artist will use the Library’s collections to inspire an ambitious project, an installation titled The View from Mount Disappointment. It is inspired by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell who journeyed to the summit of Port Phillip Bay in 1824 only to be disappointed by the view (which was completely obscured). Evans’ research will include the exploration of narratives that have been previously overlooked, such as Indigenous perspectives.
