ARTS HUB AUSTRALIA — Methods of display are integral to the context, appreciation and enjoyment of an artefact. However these methods are designed to be unobtrusive and become invisible or disregarded by the museum visitor.

The presentation of an artefact has a profound effect on the interpretation of the work. Once an object is displayed there is a layering of information; the reading of each individual object, the dialogue between objects displayed together and the environment they inhabit. Techniques of display reveal clues not only about the objects themselves but also the context or era in which the display was curated.

Niki Sperou
About the Author
Niki Sperou is an artist with a longstanding engagement in the nexus between art, science and culture. An interest in contemporary innovations in technology, the body and her own cultural background led her to investigate connections between biotechnology and ancient Greek cultural paradigms. She presented work in Heath Bunting’s DIY DNA Day in London and participated in workshops by internationally renowned biotech-artists Oron Catts and Eduardo Kac at the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide, South Australia. Since 2006, Niki has been the artist in residence at the department of Biotechnology Flinders University. In her art practice she is constantly challenged to find suitable modes of display for her objects and installations. Her participation in Inside SAM’s Place 2007, a collaborative project between Craftsouth and the South Australian Museum, has enabled her to investigate techniques and systems of display.
