Political and International Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald Peter Hartcher won it in 1981. The Chaser’s Julian Morrow won it in 1990. Curiously, Verity Firth, who won it the year after Morrow is also the sister of The Chaser’s Charles Firth. The former solicitor and NSW Minister for Education and Training is now CEO of the Public Education Foundation, an advocacy organisation providing scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. All of them won the NSW state titles for the Plain English Speaking Awards. Peter Hartcher went on to win the national title, as did NSW winner 2012 Isabel Crawford, who will fly to London to represent Australia at the International English-Speaking Union Public Speaking Final in May.
