The Benalla Art Gallery is a prime tourist attraction to the town and is about to get even more attractive when it holds the Benalla Nude exhibition over Easter 2014. The inaugural award worth $50,000 for the best painting of the naked human figure in oil, acrylic, watercolour or mixed media is the creation of the Friends of the Benalla Art Gallery who want more people to come to Benalla to see for themselves the splendour of the striking gallery on the banks of Lake Benalla and the glories of the works it holds, from Rick Amor and Howard Arkley to so many Bs like Brack, Blackman, Boyd and Bunny all the way through past Conder and Crooke to Juan Davila and Roy de Maistre to Dobell, Drysdale and local artist Ivan Durrant all the way past Nolan and Margaret Preston, Thea Proctor and Clifton Pugh to Brett Whiteley, Fred Williams and Walter Withers finishing with Victor Zelman. Let’s just say that the gallery has a world-class collection and let Durrant do some talking.
