While Aldous Huxley once said, ‘Habit converts luxurious enjoyments into dull and daily necessities,’ there are some things in life, such as creativity, that benefit from repetition. When it comes to daily creative practice perhaps it is better to listen to the wisdom of Aristotle, who said, ‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.’
We should treat our creative habits the same way we are meant to treat all healthy habits. Try not to lose the sense of joy that motivated you to take up the habit in the first place, don’t treat it like a chore, and don’t take on so much that you overburden yourself and end up failing. And don’t forget the rewards.
