The Blue Room: seeding new and emerging artists

THE BLUE ROOM (PERTH): The Blue Room is vital to the Perth cultural scene, Producer Kerry O’Sullivan says. ‘This tiny little building is a hub of a lot of creativity.' The Blue Room is a place where the genesis of independent work can have a chance to breath and get performed for the first time.

The Blue Room is quietly excited about the opportunities that may come with the opening this week of it’s very large neighbour, the new State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. The bar may have lost its city views but the Blue Room gains an even more vibrant cross-pollinating Northbridge arts precinct all squeezed into a three-block radius. It will hopefully help build The Blue Room’s profile locally and nationally and forge further links for the new and emerging performing artists it supports.

The process has already started with a soon to be announced partnership with the Perth Theatre Company. ‘What we’re looking for is places that our artists can go after here’, says The Blue Room’s Producer, Kerry O’Sullivan. It’s fantastic to nurture and grow emerging artists she says but they also see established artists coming back frustrated, unable to find support or funding for their new works. ‘This tiny little building is a hub of a lot of creativity,’ says O’Sullivan but hopefully we can push up and out into the wider world as well.
