From increased exposure to new ways of evaluating one’s own practise, TV work can be invaluable for artists. 

The risk adverse nature of Australian television and the endless hunt for ratings means that there’s little in the way of arts coverage – and the associated opportunities for artists such programs bring – on our screens. There are, however, occasional alternatives to the news and current affairs programs, the endless reality shows, and shallow soap operas that make up the bulk of Australian content on local television – if you only know where to look.

Richard Watts is ArtsHub's National Performing Arts Editor; he also presents the weekly program SmartArts on Three Triple R FM, and serves as the Chair of La Mama Theatre's volunteer Committee of Management.
