When Deaf artist, filmmaker, curator, advocate Irene Holub was growing up, representations of Deaf artists were hard to find, she tells ArtsHub ahead of their new show, the Deaf artist-led opera Manifesto of Silences, which she directs and which debuts at Melbourne Fringe this October.

Holub was determined to harness her own story. ‘From a young age, colour, movement and shape were my first languages, long before I had access to my actual language, Auslan,’ Holub says.
