David Roche Gallery seeks a curator to join its team as it celebrates ten years and the completion of significant capital redevelopment work.
About David Roche Gallery
David Roche Gallery is a unique organisation in Adelaide, South Australia. Opened in 2016, the Gallery is the legacy of collector, David Roche AM (1930-2013), who amassed a European fine and decorative art collection from the 18th and 19th centuries. Regular guided tours explore David’s residence, Fermoy House, and a separate gallery is used for temporary exhibitions. The exhibition program is developed from a range of sources including inhouse curated exhibitions, touring exhibitions and guest curators. A wide range of lectures and events complement the collection, exhibitions, and Adelaide’s busy festival calendar.
The Opportunity
This role is a rare opportunity to join a dynamic and outstanding gallery which strives to present excellence in the decorative arts. You will contribute to the management of DRG’s house tours and exhibition program to ensure the Gallery is a must-see destination in Adelaide. You will work across all aspects of the collection, manage a part-time assistant curator, and work collaboratively with the Director.
Key Selection Criteria
- A tertiary qualification in art history, or related field and postgraduate museum studies, or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of European and British fine and decorative art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is highly desirable.
- Proven curatorial experience in developing and delivering exhibitions.
- Excellent writing and research skills demonstrated through catalogues and/or published journal articles.
- Sound understanding of professional museum practice, including exhibition installation, object handling and cataloguing, and collection management systems (Presto).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to liaise effectively with diverse stakeholders; and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent organisational skills, flexibility and proficiency in setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Previous experience in the management of volunteers.
- Proficiency in the use of WordPress, Humanitix, Mailchimp, and Photoshop desirable.
- Familiarity with Australian craft and design desirable.
Knowledge
As our ideal candidate you will have relevant experience, education and training with demonstrated practical curatorial experience. You will have a thorough art historical knowledge, excellent writing skills, and be a confident public speaker. You excel in a small, but busy arts organisation, with competing deadlines and multiple curatorial projects with both short and long lead times.
