Art Centre Manager

The position manages the art centre in Titjikala, a small and friendly Northern Territory Indigenous community that creates a range of unique art.

Position Description 

About the Community & Art Centre

Tapatjatjaka Arts is an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre in the small, quiet and friendly community of Titjikala, about 107 km south of Alice Springs. Tapatjatjaka Arts produces diverse artworks, such as paintings, wire sculptures, felted items, punu, batik, raffia and ceramics and participates in numerous regional events. The community has a primary school, child care facility, aged care facility, clinic and general store.

The Role – Art Centre Manager 

Reporting to the Tapatjatjaka Art and Craft Aboriginal Corporation Board of Directors, the Art Centre Manager will: 

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the art centre including correspondence, financial management, governance, sales and promotion, staff supervision, artistic and career development of artists, events and exhibitions, art centre funding and report writing, assets and stock control, stakeholder relationships and contract management.
  • Maintain website, social media and art catalogue system.
  • Prepare funding submissions, report acquittals, and other report writing, in consultation with the bookkeeper.
  • Manage finances – budgeting, banking, working closely with the bookkeeper, and report to the Art Centre Directors.
  • Maintain equipment, vehicle, buildings and facilities ensuring that they are in line with OH&S standards.
  • Manage staff, volunteers and artists.
  • Encourage and support Aboriginal employment, through training and mentoring.
  • Market and promote the art centre locally and nationally, through appropriate exhibitions, projects, market stalls, advocacy activities and prizes.
  • Administer artists’ copyright and intellectual property including license agreements.
  • Recognise and respect existing traditional law and leadership frameworks as they impact on the governance of the art centre.
  • Maintain a cooperative, flexible and harmonious relationship with members, the community, its Council and other local organisations, as well as with external organisations and stakeholders. 
  • Salary & Benefits

    A 12-months fulltime contract is offered, renewable depending on funding being secured. Remuneration is $90,000 – $105,000 p.a., depending on qualifications and experience, plus superannuation as per current legislation. Salary sacrifice packaging is available (capped).

    A modern, fully furnished and fully air-conditioned house will be provided, including electricity, water & internet, at no cost to the employee. A vehicle is provided for use in the community and to Alice Springs.

    Air fare, or equivalent, to Alice Springs from the Australian capital city nearest the home of the successful applicant will be paid to commence work. Generous leave conditions apply.

    Selection Criteria

  • Relevant professional experience and/or qualifications in arts management, business, community development or similar.
  • Ability to work with and support artists to create a range of quality art.
  • Strong work commitment, personal integrity, ability to solve problems and to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated management skills including successful business, governance and cultural aspects of working for an Aboriginal Corporation.
  • Good written communication and numerical skills.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder and time management skills.
  • Ability to mentor, train and develop staff skills.
  • Basic understanding of Indigenous artwork, colour theory and ability to mix paint colours.
  • The successful applicant will have a current manual driver’s license and be trained and be experienced in driving a manual 4WD on unsealed roads. This includes the ability to change a 4WD tyre, or be willing to undertake a nationally accredited 4WD training course prior to commencement of employment.
  • Ability to take high quality photographs with a digital SLR camera or Iphone.
  • Previous experience in working and living in a remote community
  • Knowledge of contemporary Aboriginal and broader visual arts industry, prizes, art markets and exhibitions opportunities for emerging and established artist career development

    Annual Leave

    6 weeks annual leave (based on completion of ordinary hours). A return airfare to an Australian Capital city will be provided after the completion of I year.

    Time off in Lieu

    Where approved by the Board of Directors, you may take time off in lieu (TOIL), up to a maximum of 10 days per year.
