For over a decade, dance innovators Djuki Mala (The Chooky Dancers) from the Galiwin’ku community (Elcho Island) in North East Arnhem Land have been exploring and expanding the notions of contemporary Aboriginal performance.
An internet sensation in 2007 with their YouTube take on Zorba the Greek, the group quickly became the hot ticket at arts festivals both locally and internationally. Now, following recent appearances in China, Taiwan, the Solomon Islands and Canada – including Montreal Comedy Festival and the MOHAWK First Nations Festival 2013 – the group have returned home to create a new, self-titled show which will tour nationally from the end of this month.
