Queensland singer-songwriter Kev Carmody has won the prestigious Australia Council Don Banks Music Award. The $60,000 prize is annually awarded to recognise Australian artists who have made an outstanding contribution to music over many years.
Carmody is an advocate for Indigenous Australia’s oral tradition, and uses his music as a vessel for storytelling. Kev grew up in Southern Queensland, and worked as a back country labourer for much of his life before studying history and music at University at 33. Heavily influenced by his Irish and Murri heritage, Carmody continued the storytelling tradition by presenting his academic assignments through music and song.
