To micromanage or not to micromanage?

Is micromanagement ever a good thing?
[This is archived content and may not display in the originally intended format.]

Micromanaging is considered to be a negative term, but are there situations that require a manager to micromanage?

It is not hard to understand why micromanagement might be perceived negatively. When done at inappropriate times, it can make employees feel that they are not valued or trusted, and it can cause them to lose their confidence in their own abilities, and therefore their motivation for the job. Employers will stop taking initiative or being proactive, because they have been given the message that that behaviour does not achieve anything.
