Rising music talents at anniversary awards

Debut stars and blazing talents feature on the nominees list of the 2022 APRA Music Awards, including Rob Hirst, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Kid LAROI, Genisis Owusu and more.

Australia’s music sector celebrates the recent release of nominees for the 2022 APRA Music Awards – their 40th anniversary. Contenders are led by strong voices such as Rob Hirst (who took out Song of the Year in 2021 with Gardigal Land), 2022 Grammy nominee Hiatus Kaiyote, and Sydney rapper Masked Wolf and Tyron Hopi, whose Astronaut in the Ocean was dubbed TikTok’s song of the year 2021.

Nominated for their co-written piece First Nations, Rob Hirst and Tasman Keith said the song is about bringing two nations into collaboration. Keith said: ‘Ignorance is still around and the longing for understanding still [lingers] within me – [there’s] the need for knowledge to be shared, for knowledge to be heard.’
