Successful funding recipients include dance and theatre companies, artists, poets and more.

‘We have a wealth of talent and expertise in this city and often all that is required to develop and bring it to the fore is a little financial assistance,’ Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said.

‘I hope the people of Perth will share the Council’s enthusiasm by coming along to enjoy some of the performances and exhibitions.’

Of the 12 successful projects, Barking Gecko Theatre Company is the only theatre company to receive funding. The company has received $15,000 in this round.

Barking Gecko’s CEO Helen Hristofski said they were ‘thrilled that the city of Perth is supporting such a strong local story’ as Jasper Jones, which is based on the novel by Fremantle-based author Craig Silvey and adapted by WA playwright Kate Mulvany.

‘The support is critical for Barking Gecko to realise work on an imaginative and physical scale for teens and families,’ Hristofski said. ‘Jasper Jones has a strong sense of identity. It’s a ripper.’

The production’s premiere season runs from 17 July to 9 August 2014, with the play exploring ‘notions of race, class and family breakdown through the eyes of teens revealing their astonishing resilience and capacity for hope’.
