‘We’re the theatrical equivalent of a taco truck,’ laughs Ash Flanders, one half of independent theatre-makers Sisters Grimm. ‘We’re messy, dirty and you’ll feel worse a few hours after the show but at the time the grease and filth tastes great.’

It’s not how you’d expect a couple of theatre makers to describe themselves, but Flanders and his theatrical partner in crime, playwright/director Declan Greene, want to mess with your expectations. Sisters Grimm are the company behind subversive DIY works Summertime in the Garden of Eden and Little Mercy, the latter of which is currently playing at the Sydney Theatre Company. Known for their impoverished aesthetic, cast of drag queens, strippers and other assembled non-actors, you’re more likely to catch a Sisters Grimm performance in a backyard shed than a mainstage theatre.
