Adelaide Festival 2026: Matthew Lutton reveals his inaugural program

Lutton discusses the creative shift required in programming a festival instead of a theatre company, and why he has not programmed a centrepiece opera next year.

The 2026 Adelaide Festival program, launched today (Monday 27 August), has a strong focus on music, including a free opening night concert in Elder Park by Pulp, the Britpop band who prove that ‘irony and elegance can go hand in hand‘, as well as the previously announced inclusion of acclaimed French orchestra and choir, Ensemble Pygmalion.

Collectively, the Ensemble, and its founder and conductor Raphaël Pichon, are ‘leaders in their interpretation of early music. They celebrate you hearing Bach and Monteverdi with entirely new ears – it’s electric,’ Adelaide Festival’s Artistic Director Matthew Lutton OAM said earlier this year.
