We all know how closely politicians are scrutinised on their style – Germaine Greer’s comments on Julia Gillard’s jackets spring to mind. But whether you like it or not what you choose to wear automatically sends out a message to your employer about who you are. You just have to make sure it’s the message you want to send, and this all depends on your place of employment.

Turning up to a formal business place wearing jeans and a t-shirt while everyone around you is in suits is only telling your employer that you’d rather be somewhere else. And if you don’t swap that shirt for a business jacket, you may soon find you are.
