The Australian Ballet School

Head of Artistic & Integrated Health

Lead this critical function for the Australian Ballet School as Head of Artistic & Integrated Health

0.8FTE | Southbank

At the Australian Ballet School, we train the person first and equip our students with the education and knowledge to ensure their artistic sustainability and holistic development – and that’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a Head of Artistic & Integrated Health to lead this critical function. This role brings together artistic performance and health leadership, ensuring they operate in alignment to support safe, sustainable and high-performing dancers in an adolescent vocational training setting.

This is a senior leadership role working in close partnership with the Artistic Director and Head of School. You will lead a multidisciplinary team and provide strategic direction, clinical governance and operational oversight to ensure student health, wellbeing and performance support.

The role:

This role is accountable for the design, oversight and continuous development of the School’s integrated health and performance approach.

  • Establish and lead an evidence-based framework that supports both student well-being and performance outcomes
  • Work alongside Artistic leadership to ensure health considerations are embedded into training and performance environments
  • Provide clear, concise reporting to Executive and Board on health, risk and performance matters
  • Maintain governance across clinical practice, safeguarding, duty of care and compliance requirements
  • Lead and coordinate a multidisciplinary health and performance team
  • Oversee complex and high-risk student matters, including structured return-to-training and performance planning
  • Ensure consistency in care through appropriate systems, documentation and referral pathways
  • Incorporate injury prevention, recovery, load management and mental skills into the student environment
  • Use data and external insight to inform decision-making and improve outcomes over time
  • Manage engagement with families and relevant stakeholders where appropriate
  • Fulfil responsibilities as a Child Safety Officer in line with legislative and organisational requirements

What you’ll bring:

  • You will have established experience operating in a senior capacity within a high-performance environment, with responsibility for health, well-being, or performance functions.
  • You will be confident leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex case scenarios, particularly where performance outcomes and wellbeing considerations intersect.
  • Your background will include a strong understanding of injury prevention, rehabilitation and adolescent development, ideally within dance, sport or a comparable setting.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification is required, along with a sound understanding of safeguarding, duty of care and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience working within elite artistic or sporting environments will be viewed favourably.

How you operate:

  • You approach decisions with care and sound judgement, particularly where there is competing pressure between performance expectations and individual wellbeing.
  • You can move between strategic oversight and operational involvement without losing clarity or direction. Others rely on your ability to remain measured, considered and consistent, especially in complex or high-pressure situations.
  • You build trust with a broad range of stakeholders and communicate in a way that is calm, clear, direct and appropriate to the context. You take responsibility for outcomes and ensure standards are maintained.

Why you’ll love it:

The Head of Artistic and Integrated Health sits at the centre of how the School supports its students to perform at a high level while maintaining their long-term health and wellbeing.

It offers the opportunity to influence practice, shape systems and contribute to an environment that prepares students for sustainable professional careers. The scope of the role allows for both strategic input and practical impact, working alongside experienced leaders within a highly regarded institution.

Requirements:

  • Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain)
  • National Police Check
  • Capacity to work outside standard hours where required

How to Apply:

If you are interested in a role that combines leadership, accountability and impact within a high-performance environment, we encourage you to apply.
