Twenty years after its founding exhibition, the NPG has finally been recognised as a major cultural institution.

As of yesterday, the NPG officially began operating as a statutory authority. The significant development will position the gallery as an iconic national institution and allow it greater flexibility in fulfilling its goals. As a statutory authority, the gallery will be both legally and financially separate from the Commonwealth, making it less dependent on political seasons – though clearly still tied to the Arts budget.
