A surprising number of Melbourne’s arts community didn’t go to the big culture event of White Night. Some were interstate, at the Adelaide Fringe, the World Theatre Festival in Brisbane or the National Play Festival in Perth. Others just chose suburbia and independence, plumping for the Next Wave Social at the Northcote Town Hall.
In fact, the great success of White Night was in attracting crowds who don’t habitually go to galleries or stop for street theatre. An estimated 300,000 people lined up to enjoy a cornucopia of free events.
