The long and short of the literary week that was

While literary award longlists dominated publishing news this week, there was also corporate fisticuffs, festival news, releases and a passing.

If you like lists and books, then you must’ve been in heaven this week as major international and local literary awards and prizes revealed the writers that made their lists. But that’s not just the long and short of it in the literary world this week. There were other developments, including the ongoing battle for the self-publishing market, the impending launch of a festival favourite, the anticipated release of a beloved author’s new book and the death of an acclaimed author.  

But firstly those lists. In the past couple of weeks the writers in the running for the Miles Franklin and Stella Awards were revealed, and many of those names are appearing again this second week of April. So, to cut some longlists short, this week the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards were released, as were the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Kibbie Awards (which encompasses the Kibble and Dobbie Literary Awards).
