Perhaps it was those days growing up in the small Wimmera town of Jeparit where he first played the flute on a school music camp at the age of 10 with the enthusiastic support of his teacher Glenys Ferguson, or later in his second year at Dimboola Memorial Secondary College when he first started conducting as a 13 year old in the school’s well-credentialled music program, but Mark Shiell has made a double career conducting and as an advocate of youth music making.
