Delhi artist Anirudh Sainath Krishnamani, 22, is contemplating legal action after being forced to remove three of his paintings from an exhibition at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (CKP), a popular gallery in Bangalore. The artist was asked by city police to take down the paintings after authorities received an oral complaint from Bharatiya Janata Party State media coordinator A.L. Shuvakumar. The complaint pertained to the exhibition of ‘obscene’ paintings.
The artist himself believes that the offence taken by the complainant is due to ‘ignorance about Indian culture and mythology.’ The paintings removed from the gallery were nude or sexual paintings of gods and goddesses: a nude painting of the deity Kali, a seductive Mohini and Shiva-Sati in an each other’s embrace.
