Flailing council could shed gallery, for art’s sake

The City of Newcastle is in dire financial straits, and may be forced to pay with its gallery.

Residents of Newcastle, a city that has long been known as a champion of the arts, may be without a gallery if plans to rescind redevelopment funding are to go head.  

The worsening financial position of the Newcastle City Council means that plans for the redevelopment, which is already underway, might be put on hold until the council is in an operating surplus – a date that community members are worried may never arrive.
