You can tell a lot about a year by the topics that garner attention. We surveyed the exhibitions scheduled for 2017 to get a heads-up on the issues that will dominate the year.

The art we choose to show captures a picture of our society. 2016 was a difficult year, with derailed governments, geopolitical ruptures and trauma and tragedies as the refugee plight spiralled. None of these is likely to change in a hurry but we can expect the choice of art shown in 2017 to reflect the ways artists help us live in this challenging world.
Gina Fairley is ArtsHub's Senior Contributor, after 12 years in the role as National Visual Arts Editor. She has worked for extended periods in America and Southeast Asia, as gallerist, arts administrator and regional contributing editor for a number of magazines, including Hong Kong based Asian Art News and World Sculpture News. She is an Art Tour leader for the AGNSW Members, and lectures regularly on the state of the arts. She is based in Mittagong, regional NSW.
