In David Malouf and Friends, five artists – Bruce Reynolds, Noel McKenna, Karla Marchesi, Anna Carey and Camille Serisier – will interpret the author’s works.

Malouf has become internationally-acclaimed for his books, including Collected Stories and Remembering Babylon.

The author, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, will respond to the artworks through his professional medium, writing.

His new writings will be displayed alongside artworks in the free exhibition, which include paintings, illustrations, photography, installations and multimedia work.

Museum of Brisbane Director Peter Denham said the collaboration was a ‘significant accomplishment for the Museum and one we think all Australians will appreciate’.

‘Generations of Australians have grown up enjoying David’s books, essays and poems so it is a privilege to have him on board for our latest exhibition that will pay homage to his incredible contribution to Australian culture,’ Denham said.

Brisbane has special significance for the author, who was brought up there before he moved across the globe to write from destinations such as England and Italy. These new artworks inspired by Malouf capture a sense of the city, the suburbs and the climate of Brisbane.

Accompanying the exhibition is a series of special talks, which prove the writer is in high demand. In Conversation with David Malouf was presented to a sold out crowd last week.

Events still available for booking include an hour-long panel discussion, Exploring David Malouf and Friends, on 27 July when the exhibiting artists will join Malouf to talk about a shared cultural identity.

One other discussion, titled Intersections: Art and Literature, sees the author exchange thoughts on shared influences between the two art forms, featuring an art dealer, museum director, bookshop owner and other special guests.
