Persistence pays off: Green light for Newcastle Art Gallery’s $35.6M expansion

After two knock-backs, and 16-years of lobbying, Newcastle Art Gallery gets green light for $35.6M expansion project, which will double its space.

A few days ago, Newcastle City Council (NCC) signed off on committing fund for the long awaited expansion of Newcastle Art Gallery.

The $35.6 million project has been on and off the table for the better part of 16-years.

‘We have had a couple of goes at it previously,’ gallery director Lauretta Morton told ArtsHub. ‘The first proposal was to knock down the existing building, and a design competition was run in 2005/6. Then in 2021/13 a new redevelopment plan didn’t go ahead either.’
