‘It’s a chicken and egg thing,’ says Marea Jablonski, Principal Director of BGM Agency. ‘How do you get the experience without having an agent? How do you get an agent without having the experience?

It’s a dilemma many actors starting out face.

‘The practicality is that an actor is unlikely to be considered for professional work without an agent, says Jablonski. The Australian industry is relatively small and conservative and casting agents are more likely to cast well-known actors than new and unknown ones. What’s more, who your agent is signals to casting directors where you fit in the industry, Jablonski says. Having a reputable agent can be crucial to getting a career off the ground and keeping it on track.
