Rockhampton Regional Council - Communities and Culture
Museum of Art Director
Council is seeking a progressive, commercially astute, and engaging Director to elevate Rockhampton Museum of Art on the national stage.
Are you a visionary arts leader ready to shape the next chapter of one of Australia’s most exciting regional cultural institutions? This is your opportunity to take the helm of the Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) and drive its evolution into a nationally recognised centre of artistic excellence.
Following the extraordinary success of its new, state‑of‑the‑art 4,711sqm facility in the heart of Rockhampton’s CBD, RMOA is poised for its next phase of growth. With a proud 50‑year legacy and one of the country’s most significant regional collections of mid‑twentieth‑century Australian art, the Museum is searching for a dynamic and commercially minded Director to elevate its impact, expand its reach, and strengthen its position as Central Queensland’s flagship cultural destination.
As Director, you will guide RMOA with a bold, strategic vision—one that balances world‑class curatorial ambition with sustainable, future‑focused operations. You will inspire and empower a high-performing team across engagement, learning, visitor experience, exhibitions, and collections, while deepening connections with artists, donors, partners, and the wider community.
Your leadership will directly support Council’s strategic direction, delivering cultural, social, and economic value for the region. This is a rare chance to make your mark, champion creativity, and lead a premier institution into its next era.
About You

- Tertiary qualifications in art history, visual arts, fine arts, or arts administration, along with extensive executive experience in a comparable cultural or gallery setting.
- Exceptional leadership capability, with a talent for mentoring and developing high-performing, results-driven teams.
- A strategic mindset, contributing to Council’s vision and delivering measurable cultural and economic outcomes for the region.
- Commercial acumen, with the ability to secure funding, foster philanthropic partnerships, and maximise commercial opportunities to support long-term sustainability.
- Outstanding communication and relationship-building skills, enabling productive engagement with artists, donors, stakeholders, and community groups.
- Adaptability and resilience, thriving in a fast-paced environment where creativity and operational excellence work hand in hand.
