About the National Art School

The National Art School (NAS) is Australia’s leading independent art school. We are a ‘not-for-profit’ independent Higher Education Institution offering accredited degree programs in Fine Art at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Our distinctive studio-based teaching model; our outstanding academic faculty; and our dedicated campus support the delivery of exceptional education programs that lead to the outstanding student experience and graduate outcomes for which we are widely recognised.

The NAS campus includes specialised facilities in the studio areas of Drawing, Ceramics, Painting, Photomedia, Printmaking and Sculpture, and core studies in Art History & Theory and Professional Studies.

We currently offer degree courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours), Master of Fine Art (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Art (DFA). Our updated academic and strategic plans include a commitment to the continued evolution of our courses and subject offerings, with updated degree program structures being implemented from 2026.

NAS is at an exciting phase of development as we seek to consolidate our position as Australia’s leading independent fine art school and extend our international reach and reputation.

Central to the realisation of that ambition is our continuing commitment to the individual development of students through intensive studio-based learning under the guidance of experienced artists and educators. The continued provision of an outstanding student experience ensures we continue to attract a diverse range of talented and committed students and provide opportunities that assist our graduates to achieve professional success.

About the Photomedia department

The study of Photomedia at NAS is structured to provide students with an opportunity to fully explore this rich and diverse area of practice. From foundational study of the conventional modes of Photomedia practice to more contemporary methods and Photomedia practices, students are guided towards the development of their individual artistic sensibilities.

Our Photomedia studios and workshops support a comprehensive range of processes covering Photomedia techniques such as studio and portrait photography, experimental and conceptual Photomedia, video and time-based media and narrative practice. NAS offers specialised teaching facilities including a darkroom, digital labs, lighting studio and dedicated spaces and equipment to support study and practice in Photomedia.

In addition to the full time Head of Photomedia, the department includes a permanent Photomedia Lecturer, a dedicated full-time Photomedia Studio Technician and extensive Sessional Academic Lecturers.
